To follow up with you regarding the fun we had on Literacy Night I wanted to give some reminders about instilling the love of reading into your child.

• Start young. Read to your young children regularly and make it a time for togetherness and fun.
• Chat about it. Conversation helps build on what your children have learned and deepens their interest.
• Wrap reading into your child’s routine, children are more likely to stick with it. A good time to read is before bed; its helps children to wind down and get a good night’s sleep.
• Read. If you love reading, what better excuse to indulge yourself?  When your child sees you reading, they’ll be likely to copy you.

• Keep your child’s book case well stocked with the right book. These are the books your children doesn’t want to put down.
• Know your child’s interests.  Your children have their own interests so listen to them. Keep in mind this may mean reading a book over and over.
• Stimulate curiosity. A child’s attention span is short. The more you intrigue your children the longer they’ll stay focused.
• Variety is the spice of life. Make sure your children have both fiction and nonfiction.
